WHAT MAKES A GOOD SAILMAKER?
OUR APPROACH TO SAILMAKING
It begins with listening. There’s no mystery to what makes a great sail. It all starts with a sailmaker who listens to their customer carefully to determine the best solution. From there, it’s a matter of translating the conversation into Design, Material Selection, Specifications, and Finishing Details.
Many of the Big Brand sailmakers are building their standard "paneled" sails in offshore facilities where the cost of labor is cheaper. These are Sail Factories, not Sail Lofts. They are big, impersonal and a place where little attention is paid to every minute detail. We build our sails in a boutique sail loft where a small staff of expert craftsmen pay loving attention to every part of the sailmaking process from design, construction and most important of all; finishing.
Our designer has five decades of practical sailing and design experience. When Brian was a child he grew up crewing for him in dinghy's. He opened one of the first sail lofts in South Africa and has been designing our sails for almost 40 years. He started with pencil and pad. He now uses the latest computer design software. This kind of personal connection between sailmaker and sail designer is invaluable and will ensure that you will receive a beautiful sail.
Great Circle Sails meet the highest quality standards demanded by the most discriminating sailors. Our pledge is to keep it that way and to maintain affordability. We use only the very best fabric and fittings available and would never compromise quality for profit.
